Examine Your Faith – Are You Living Like Christ Is In You?

Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test? But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do not fail the test.  2 Corinthians 13:5-6

The Apostle Paul wrote this to Christians in the church at Corinth whom he was preparing to visit for the third time. After getting to know them and hearing about their behavior he basically told them to make sure they were saved! Does the same admonition apply to Christians in America today?

Some believers had conformed to the world instead of resisting ungodliness and sin. Paul felt it necessary to confront them about exactly what they believed. This holds true today where it is even more necessary to challenge Christians – especially those who have become too comfortable or complacent in their faith – with this same message. Why? If you take a good look at our culture it is obvious Christians are losing influence. This must be addressed; if a majority of Americans profess Christianity why aren’t we seeing more fruit in culture?

We should never back down from the truth. Lukewarm Christianity is spreading across America right now: apathy over abortion and defending traditional families, the weakening of marriage and the advancing agenda of homosexuality; the perversion of prime time television and the entire entertainment industry; government corruption, greed, and the mishandling of our money, and complacency about social issues and absolute truth.

Biblical truth must be the foundation of our worldview and affect everything we do. Paul knew what many of us know today; If Christians were truly saved and sanctified, we’d be advancing the kingdom of Jesus Christ and bearing fruit for eternity. I can’t help but believe how Christians vote and the recent presidential election reveals a lack of fruit – or rotten fruit – in America.

If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.  John 15:7-9

Are we truly seeking Him first and living what we believe? Our worldview must start with believing the Bible is the source of all truth and moral absolutes exist; Jesus lived a sinless life, became the perfect sacrifice, and as a result we have salvation through Him by grace. With the help of the Holy Spirit, those who believe this will live accordingly.

If Jesus changed your heart, now let Him change your mind. Regardless of whether the message is accepted by others, you and I are called to be His messengers in word and deed. Let’s examine ourselves to make sure we are in the faith and good fruit will follow.
